Who We Are
Street dance culture is a form of expression that was born under oppression. It is a way for Black and Brown people to express themselves, to be heard, and to elevate out of difficult conditions.
This culture can now be found everywhere across the globe. We have seen that this culture, one of the major contributions to the world, can change lives. It can overcome cultural barriers and unite people as a universal language when it’s taught correctly. However, the BIPOC in our community continues to struggle with ongoing issues of appropriation, injustice and inequality.
Our goal is to establish a sustainable and independent economy for the community by offering a safe space for the community to express and preserve the culture. We will name it the Underground Spot (the Spot or US).
The Spot will have a theater, a performance/event space, and a school. Professionals from the community will be the mentors, teachers, directors, choreographers, developing talents and also the daily administrative staff to create stable jobs for the community. Participants will learn everything from the names of basic steps, all the way to creating full stage productions for street & club dance, movement codification, and also develop systems that are conducive to their types of movement expression.
We have many initiatives and one of our main goals is to offer free classes and free after school education for those who can't afford it while providing stable jobs for qualified members of the street and club dance community as teachers and cultural advisors. This will help create the trisector of guest, student, teacher. We will do all this with the expressed intent of understand black and brown culture.
Mission
Help BIPOC arts culture with different programs that help foster education and assistance in developing a community that pushes the support of the arts developed by BIPOC culture.
Because our mission is so large and complex we have divided them into different sections. Each section will work individually but collectively towards the overarching mission stated above. We have been working around the community for he past forty years and have seen many things take form but without the actual communities involvement from the beginning at some point in each of these instances things start to falter. These collectives helps us to help the community to continue to grow as organically as it creates but keeps those creations tied to the community and serves as a good entrance point for those not from the culture/community.
